Raised Beds

There is much sawing and banging out on The Triangle today as the raised beds slowly take shape.

These raised beds will be positioned in the vegetable area at the eastern end of The Triangle and in a few weeks will be full of soil ready for planting out with fruit, flowers and vegetables. Get your seeds planted ready.

Sunshine!!!!!

Phew! what a scorcher! as they used to say. What a beeeauuutiful day it is today! The four legged residents have been having a great time in the sun, but now they are all flopped, too tired to play anymore! A plant water was definately in order. Now to wait for it to cool a bit before starting the clear up for our Neighbours Day this Saturday!!!

Shame

The lovely flowering currant outside our gate, a gift to us which we hoped all would enjoy, has been destroyed by a dog.
We are very upset about this as it was only there a few weeks. If this is what we allow to go on how can we ever make progress. I trust that the owners will be banned from letting their dog out on the triangle. This must not be allowed to happen again.
I wanted to put containers growing veg out on the green but I do not feel that I can do that now.
Christine.

Benjamin

Today is a sad day for The Triangle. One of the doggies that used to reguarly visit us passed away today. Ben, the Yorkshire Terrier was an old boy who was blind and mostly deaf but he was a real character who loved to potter outside.

Rest In Peace Ben. You will be missed on The Triangle and in the hearts of all who knew you x

Where's The Snowman?

Having spent a day Christmas Shopping in the snow, I returned to The Triangle. Shopping dumped unceromonously on the floor I rushed outside expectently.

Sadly I was disappointed - despite the snow there was no sign of a GTRA Snowman :-(

Winter View

Tonight the winter is definately setting in on The Triangle. The air of the night is still and a blanket of fog has fallen.

Looking across The Triangle from the east gate it looks encharnting with lights from Elmsworth Ave reflecting on the shiney tops of the benches.

Evocative as the atmosphere outside may be, I was glad to return from the bitter cold to a seat inside next to the fire!

Quiet Triangle

With the cold weather most definately setting in The Triangle is a rather quiet place, especially compared to how it was during the summer.

But as I gaze out of my study window I see the crops we planted this year. Some have died off in the frost but some are still growing nicely and harvest time for the swedes and potatoes is getting ever closer.

It looks like christmas morning will be spent lifting fresh, new potatoes ready for dinner.....now stop thinking about christmas for another week or so!!!

Festive Meeting?

I think it's a great idea that we meet up on the Triangle weather permitting, or in the church as suggested at the last Committee meeting for a Pre Christmas get together!
Wrap yourself up warm and come out for Mulled wine, hot mince pies and roasted chestnuts!!
What does everybody think??

Autumn

Autumn is certainly upon us!
Everyone is putting their heating on.

But today the sun is doing its best to shine some light on The Triangle - just because the temperature is dropping a little must not stop us opening our gates and heading outside in true community spirit.

What ideas do we have for actiities/events through the impending winter months???

triangular shaped crop circles

An eerie finominum fernominom thing happened at the weekend on the triangle , the day after the clean up and bbq day these strange triangluar crop circles appeared from nowhere , it can only be asumed that they were made by some kind of extra terestrial force

timber donations please

Can anyone help ? , a safety fence is much needed around the vegetable patch , i have made a start by making some posts which measure 32 inches by 2 inches but we need lots so, if you have any scrap timber lying around that can be used for this please get in touch , the idea is to surround the patch and make a gate to keep the growing plants safe from marauding dogs

Today has been a busy day on the east corner of Triangle.

Myself, Ian, Greame and Craig have done some serious gardening! We dug over the patch of land we have designated for vegetables and wild flowers, put a brick border around and then set to work!

We planted radishes, strawberries, potatoes and chillies. Then I set to work on the wild flower area, planting out some Shoo Fly plants!

Fingers crossed they do well!!

Late night strawberries

This evening there was a very busy Craig in his shed potting up strawberry plants. Working this late is well beyond the call of duty! As can be seen from the picture, he is rather proud of his work.....

Now Craig, when are you going to plant the cream plants so we can have strawberry and cream teas out on The Triangle (if the weather ever improves!!!)

Bricking it!!!

Today there was move forwards with the developent on The Triangle.....we laid out a very artistic curve of bricks at the eastern end that will mark out a vegetable patch.

Hopefully we will soon get this area dug over ready to take some plants that may yield a crop before the end of the season. The local children were very enthusiastic to help with the digging but they didn't get very far.

Hedgehog!

Yesterday while coming back from the local shop a baby hedgehog was spotted out all on its own. Lesley took it in and looked after it until the RSPCA could come and collect it to take it off to a hedgehog rescue center in Rochdale.

The hedgehog seemed happy enough apart from missing its mummy. And it seemed quite content to be going off with other rescued hedgehogs - Lesley on the other hand was very sad to see her little boy go to a better life!

The Locals

Today there were two 18th birthdays in The Triangle - and what better way to celebrate than with a local band. Aptly called 'The Locals'.

They played a good set......

Followed by the treat of two drummers playing together.....

A very pleasant way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Cold

This afternoon we went over to Chapel Street Park, there was a meeting for ideas to improve the area.
I noticed Craig out side first of all chopping up pieces of wood that the park warden had cut off trees, he was soaked, so went out to give him a hand! Then spent a while stood in the rain and cold picking up bits of twigs!!!
Brrrrrrrrrr! I don't think I will ever get warm again!!!

Rain!

How typical is that then.....

Today Manchester City Council have visited and cut the grass of The Triangle. And now, only a few hours after they have left, we have the first heavy rain in over a week - just the conditions to make the grass grow strongly and quickly along with the ever increasing array of dandelions that have invaded.

Craig doing some 'planting'

But Craig - you cannot grow tabacco by hanging an ashtry in a sling above the trench that we set aside for growing tomatoes!!!

Perhaps we need some gardening lessons for some of the committee.....

Happily it is raining now so Tommy Tomato and Tamara Tomato will be totally content in their new home. They seem like happy tomatoes!

New BBQs bring us together

Today has been a good day for GTRA.

Siân collected two new gas BBQs for us and Sam went off to get gas for them whilst Greame and Laura set about assembling the first one. Of course, once the assembly was done it just had to be tested!

Quite quickly we found some food to cook and a shopping trip provided the rest. Although not really planned, having a BBQ in The Triangle brought out a number of residents onto The Trinagle.

Tomorrow is supposed to be good weather so we shall try again and hopefully even more people will come out and join us!

Another ransom note appears...

And one of Jerry's little leaves was enclosed!
But the thieve's note is as cryptic as ever.
What do they want?
Money?
More plants?
Geranium sap?

The geranium pot plot thickens

Tonight while myself and FlossDog were out playing ball on The Triangle a note was posted through my front door.

It seems that the missing geraniums are being held to ransom - well, at least one of them.

We must catch the plantnappers soon. If you have any information about the missing plants then please let us know.

Geranium theft - appeal for information

The two geraniums (who were, incidently, still making their roots nice and comfy in their new pots when they were 'exchanged' for two lesser specimens) are still nowhere to be seen. They both have easily recognisable purple markings on their leaves. Any information on their abduction or current location would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe we should add a lookout post and searchlights???

re; sentry shift

Well done david !! , even though the waiting list is rather long for sentry duty , the commitee were hesitant as to who could take the first turn , as you have another issue to address regarding the plant rustling of your geraniums then it may be passed at the next meeting that you take this first turn , lesleys proposal of stocks for the guilty rascal is very fitting and maybe we could have the punishment administered on the neighbours day event on the 23rd to show that we will not tolerate thievery of any kind , the culprit may try to wriggle out of it when caught by saying they were put up to it but this wont be taken as an excuse , are there any suspects in the frame already ?

The short straw for sentry shift...

I will be putting my first sentry duty shift to good use by tracking down the cheeky so'n'so who has 'borrowed' my young and vulnerable geraniums and replaced them with rather weedy weeds...
Wish me luck!
It looks like rain...

sentry guard duties

There has been a new addition on the perimeter surrounding the triangle and placed strategically in the eastern sector , it is ( or will be ) an ivy festooned arch , it is also something else though !, it has come to the attention of certain members of the commitee that during the sunflower competition which starts between may 23rd and a date to be decided that there is a good chance of skullduggery taking place , the commitee do not condone skullduggery in any way , shape or form even though the koudos of winning this compettiion is to regarded on a par with a blue ribbond at the chelsea flower show ( not the buscuit ) ( and no sniggering please ) So , the arch will also serve as a sentry box in which a seat will be sited along with a selection of books and a torch , a rota is being drawn up and commitee members will take a nightly turn in the box to guard the entrants entries , also supplied will be match sticks for those who cant keep their eyes open , a gas camping stove complete with brewing up materials and a copy of the constitution for reference , as it will be an honour to take on this duty it is suggested that patience is shown , the rota will be posted on the telegraph pole close to the arch

Cobble Clearance Completed.....

Today has seen the end of the long(ish) task of clearing the grass away from the cobbles that surround The Triangle.

This morning the last pile of grass was loaded into Mike's trailer and taken away to the local refuse tip. Simply clearing the overgrowth away has made a massive difference to The Triangle and already it is becoming a much more pleasant place to be.

Well done to everyone that was involved in the clearance work.....

Wow

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has worked on getting the grass off the stones - it looks fab and it is so nice to see the progress we've made in just a month! p.s. this is my first blog....ever!

raymond and nancy

on returning from shopping this morning i popped my head over the gate to see raymond cutting the grass away from the cobbles , he was continuing the good work stated recently and if i may say so he has done a great job of it , the reason he made a good job of it though was due to his wife nancy standing over him supervising his every move , she also cleaned up the mess he was making and so it was a team effort , the main point i am trying to make here is that they did this without prompting from anyone and were enjoying what they did which is a pleasing thing to see , well done ray and nancy

Some news on the bird house that’s sited on the telegraph pole in the eastern sector of the triangle , it being quite a small des res it was thought that it would attract small birds like blue tits and sparrows , I have to report that no birds have shown any interest ! , there is however a growing trend emerging of critters viewing the appartment , so far we have had 3 flies and one wasp , all have turned down the opportunity to move in , lets hope that we don’t have trouble with squatters if the penthouse is not snapped up soon !!!

More benches!

The third bench has arrived!!!

After mentioning that the first two were slightly low, the third bench has been constructed with both the seats in a higher position and seems much better.

The third bench has been located at the eastern end of The Trinagle so there is now a bench close to each corner.

Sunflowers

Today a number of sunflower seeds have been planted in potting compost next to the eastern telegraph pole.

Compost Bin

A compost bin has been kindly donated to The Triangle by Damon. Almost instantly it was almost filled with grass and soil that was removed during clearance of flagstones earlier in the day!

Very soon an assortment of kitchen waste was added and having a compost bin on The Triangle definately seems popular. We have started looking at getting some more so they are easily accessible to everyone.

Kerb Stones

Work has now started on clearing the overgrowth away that has been covering the decorative flag stones that surround the grass part of The Triangle.

Although not finished, it is a start and by adopting a "little and often" approach the task should be completed before too long. The biggest problem that was encountered was knowing what to do with the grass and soil that has been removed!

Start of development

Today we are very pleased that some development has started on The Green Triangle. A bird box has been attached to the eastern telegraph pole and a large Kerria shrub has been planted adjacent to it - Kerria is a substantial shrub with bright yellow spherical flowers that will hopefully provide colour throughout the summer.
